リオ先生台北レポート

Responding conference organizer’s invitation, I went back to Taipei last weekend in order to present my research paper at the international conference- Anthropological Futures, hosted by the Ethnology Institute of the Academia Sinica. Even in the midst of rainy monsoon season, many participants from around the world brave the heavy rain to participate in the conference and discuss their research interests on humanity in general and their disciplinary topics in particular. I am very happy to have seen many old friends and new acquaintances. Among those variegated papers, ranging from the political economy of the architecture and cities (by Michael Dutton and Ackbar Abbas) to the practices of aesthetics and language acquisition from the physiological levels (from Lindsay Waters and David Blundell), the talk about “Dry and Wet Thinking” by professor Paul Carter from Australia seems most relevant to the weather at hand which urged and enlightened the audience to shift our usual land-bound metaphoric thinking to a bio-sphere inspired practice of public affairs and policy decision making. The result is far-reaching in that we all learned to open up our metaphor-confined thinking patterns for multiple adaptation and connections, which Carter termed as “portal thinking”. Rob Wilson from University of California at Santa Cruz also concurred with Carter’s thesis and elaborated on the concept and model of “archipelago thinking” that not only broadens and enriches our perspectives into the oceanic ones, together they literally transported the audience beyond our usual “dry” metaphoric constraints. At the end, no one seems to mind the heavy rain outdoor as the rain seems to provide the perfect Objective Correlatives, according to T. S. Eliot, that accompany our thinking process. Many of us, I should venture to add, might even find some of Walter Benjamin’s aura reflection of the innervated selves in those puddles and small streams of abyss in the streets of Taipei.

During meal times, several of us exchanged our experiences of international border crossing and commiserate at the horror of visa problems. We all agreed that there are more films to be made just on that genre alone as there are many more stories, tragic dreadful or funny, waiting to be shared and told with cinematic means. With that mission in mind, I embarked on my journey back to Kyoto while remembering the future to come. I am only happy to be the messenger between the two cities I can call homes.

先週末、主催である中央研究院民族学研究所に招待されて、国際会議「Anthropological Futures」にて研究論文を発表するため台北に戻りました。
夏のモンスーン気候真っ最中にも関わらず、世界中からたくさんの参加者が、会議で人文科学全般の研究内容や、より学問的な内容に関して論議するため集っていました。私はたくさんの旧友や新しい知人にあえてとても嬉しかったです。
多岐に亘る論文がありましたが、なかでもオーストラリアのポール・カーター教授による「ドライ＆ウェットな思考」についての講演が、その時の天気にも一番マッチしており、聞き手の関心をとらえました。またわたしたちの常に陸だけに縛られた隠喩的思考を、地球上のあらゆる生物に対して政治問題や政策意思決定手段へと変えていくよう啓発していました。
また、カーター教授が名づけた「ポータル思考」によって、わたしたちは今までの隠喩に限られた狭い思考パターンから、多角的な適応性や関連性をもった思考パターンへと広げることができるようになった点で、彼の講演の成果はとても大きいものでした。
カリフォルニア大学サンタクルーズ校のロブ・ウィルソン教授の講演もカーター教授と符合するものであり、その概念や「群島的思考」のモデルについてさらに詳しく述べていました。
そしてそれは、われわれの視点を広大な太洋性へと、豊かなものに変えてくれただけでなく、文字通りわれわれ聴衆の「ドライ」な隠喩の制約から解き放ってくれました。
終わりには、誰も外の大雨のことなど気にならなくなり、T.S.エリオットが言うところの、雨が我々の思考過程に伴う完全な客観的相関物を与えてくれているようでした。
あえて付け加えるならば、ヴァルター・ベンヤミンの思想の一つである「アウラ」というものが、台北の街角の水溜りに映る、刺激を受けた自身の影と思った人もたくさんいたかもしれません。

食事の時間に、参加者の何人かと国境を越える時の経験談やビザ問題の恐怖について同情しつつ語り合う機会がありました。我々は、この領域だけでももっと映画が作られるべきだと思いました。なぜなら、まだ語られていないが悲劇的なほどに恐ろしい、あるいは面白おかしい話がまだまだあるはずで、これは映画という手段で語られ分かち合うべきだと思ったからです。そんな使命と来るべき未来について考えながら、京都に戻ってきました。私は「ふるさと」と呼べる２つの街の間のメッセンジャーでいられることにただただ喜びを感じています。
